11 FLORIDA GYMNASTICS 2018 MEDIA SUPPLEMENT 2017 SEASON RECAP Jan. 8 at North Carolina State The Gators opened the 2017 season with a 197.10- 194.925 win at North Carolina State. That total is the second highest for a season opener in the program’s 45-year history. Florida’s three who earned 2016 All-America honors claimed the event wins. Sophomore Alicia Boren’s 9.95 on vault was the day’s high score on any event and she used a 9.925 to win balance beam. Juniors Kennedy Baker and Alex McMurtry won floor exercise (9.925) and uneven bars (9.90), respectively. Baker led a Gator sweep of the all-around at 39.50, followed by Boren (39.475) and Amelia Hundley (39.375). Jan. 13 versus Kentucky Home and Southeastern Conference action for the Gators opened with a 197.60-196.95 win over No. 14 Kentucky in the newly renovated Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. A Gator took at least a share of each event title, including Kennedy Baker tying for the all-around win at 39.575 with Kentucky freshman Mollie Korth. Junior Rachel Slocum introduced herself to the O’Connell Center crowd with a bang, as her then collegiate-best 9.95 won the vault. Alex McMurtry collected her second consecutive uneven bars title of 2017 with a season-best 9.95. Alicia Boren equaled her season-best of 9.925 to claim the balance beam win. It was a three-way tie for first at 9.925 for the floor exercise title, as Baker shared her second win of the season with UK’s Korth and Sidney Dukes. Jan. 20 at North Carolina Florida returned to the Tar Heel State to take a 197.325-194.30 win over North Carolina. Alex McMurtry won each event she appeared in, using a 9.95 to win vault and balance beam. The vault score was a perfect mark, as she performed a Yurchenko full (9.95 start value). She also took her third straight uneven bars win of 2017, this time with a 9.90. Alicia Boren used collegiate bests to take a pair of event titles. Her 9.95 on floor exercise gave her the first floor exercise title of her collegiate career. She upped her then collegiate all-around best to 39.65 to take her second all-around title as a Gator. Jan. 27 versus Auburn (Gators Link to Pink) Kennedy Baker’s finishing routine on floor exercise was 10.0, helping Florida claim a 197.70-196.40 win over Auburn to win the 11th Annual Gators Link to Pink (breast cancer awareness meet). Four different Gators picked up the apparatus wins, with freshman Amelia Hundley also adding the all- around win. Her 9.95 (uneven bars) and 39.55 (all- around) gave Hundley her first collegiate win for each event. Alex McMurtry earned another vault 9.95 for her second-straight win. Baker’s 10.0 helped Florida tally a then season-best 49.575 on floor exercise. The evening’s balance beam title went to freshman Rachel Gowey, as she took her first event win as a Gator with a collegiate-best 9.925. The crowd of 9,108 was the sixth largest in program history and was Florida’s top attendance mark for the 2017 season. Feb. 3 at Alabama No. 6 Alabama took a 197.825-197.425 win in front of a Coleman Coliseum crowd of 14,423. The home team has won the regular-season dual in each meeting since 2003 between these two perennial powers. Alex McMurtry’s 9.90 shared third in the uneven bars standings. Rachel Slocum tied with Alabama’s Nickie Guerrero for the vault win at 9.925. It was Slocum’s second vault title as a Gator and the fifth of her collegiate career. Baker’s 9.95 on floor tied for second as Alabama’s Kiana Winston won the event with a 10.0. Freshman Amelia Hundley equaled her collegiate balance beam best of 9.90 for the second consecutive week to finish in a three-way tie for second. Baker took the all-around win at 39.575. Feb. 10 versus Georgia Florida’s 197.975-196.525 win over No. 9 Georgia was UF’s top total of the 2017 season. Big scores gave the Gators an event titles sweep.
